Consistency is Key

Our culture likes extremes.  It is much more exciting to go keto or train for a marathon than it is to eat healthfully most of the time and get regular exercise year in and year out.  Sure, it can be motivating to take on a challenge but often after that goal has been achieved motivation wanes. But when it comes to exercise and enjoying the benefits of staying active, consistency is key.

Here are 4 ways to create a consistent exercise plan that works for you.

  1. Find your motivation. This is the most important step. Perhaps you have children or grandchildren and you want to be able to easily get up and down from the floor to play with them. Or you have had a health scare and are realizing you need to take better care of yourself. If you haven’t been exercising regularly it is important to realize that you are not lazy, you just need to figure out what motivates you.

  2. Find what you enjoy. Open up the possibilities for working movement into your day with physical activities you enjoy. Meeting a friend for a long walk once a week, working in the garden, dancing… there are many ways to get moving that don’t require a treadmill or sit ups. Or maybe you could enjoy that treadmill with a podcast or phone call with a friend.

  3. Make it easy. Don’t choose a yoga studio or gym that is 30 minutes away. Find a teacher you like online and take their class in your living room. Sleep in your running/walking clothes and head out first thing in the morning. If it is too much effort just to get started it will be harder to stick with it.

  4. Make it routine. Putting exercise on your calendar will help you maintain consistency.

Believe it or not, I have clients who have been working with me for over 20 years and without question they are enjoying the benefits of their dedication.  But it is never too late to get started.  Studies show regular exercise is beneficial for your brain and your body.  Don’t miss out!

Working out at home is a great choice while we are in the middle of the pandemic.  This is an opportunity to create a routine, to integrate exercise into your lifestyle.  If you have the motivation it can be enjoyable and convenient.  I have beginner classes available you can do at your own pace as well as a live Saturday Zoom class.  Send me a message for more information!
